SPiN Tips

So you're new to spin, eh? This page is for all you newbies out there who aren't quite sure what you're doing yet. In time you will become an elite chatter like the rest of us, using acronyms left and right, typing one thousand words a minute and staying online for days at a time (because I just know that's your goal)

::General Introduction::

SPiN isn't just about chatting – there are blogs and gifts and a bunch of other neat things. So read on and discover what the world of SPiN is all about...Spinchat.com, colloquially referred to as the international server, is the smallest of 14 other SPiN communities, the largest of which is spinchat.de (this is where SPiN's roos are) This help page will focus on the international server.

Q: What does registering do?

A: "By registering a nickname you get a lot of additional features. For example you can have your own profile (with photo), chatmail and write access in the message boards. Besides that, your nickname will be password protected so nobody except yourself can use it. Registration is free. Unregistered users cannot leave messages in the guestbook" – directly from spinchat.com. Basically, when you are unregistered (unregged) you look like a complete n00b and your username appears gray verses black in the chat – you want to register if you intend on ever coming to SPiN more than once. (unreg vs reg pic)

Q: Why are people so mean?

A: I shall start by decreeing the following truth: "Not everyone is mean". However, to every truth, there is the presence of exceptions. Now why do people indulge in superfluous name-calling, ranting, ignorance and it's insidious ilk? The answer is simply this; these people are damaged, and they self-medicate this with a chat room styled chest beating ceremony of 'meanness' as a way of padding their fragile egos with faux superiority. You should not take any of their mindless nonsense to heart, as the antagonist/moron will be completely unaware of it's own stupidity and will simply state things which have no relevance (or credence) to you as a person. Oh yes, the ego inflation that occurs within Spin Chat is frightening, but one can combat such cyber-abominations by:
• Refraining from further gratifying their stupidity by replying/retaliating to their remarks.
• Right clicking the offending user and selecting "Ignore".
You should also take a moment to pity them, as its a proven fact that these Spin Chat morons will probably never procreate, and thus will never bring forth offspring to pollute our chat rooms. Ah, imagine that, a world without idiots. Utopia at last.

Q: brb, kmb, lol, are people speaking a different language?

A: no, these are actually acronyms. What is an acronym you ask? Why its an abbreviation coined from the initial letter of each successive word in a term or phrase.

Below are common acronyms used on spinchat … believe me there are more that you learn in your travels.

afk • away from keyboard brb • be right back btw • by the way
hb • hurry back bbl • be back later idk • i don't know
pm • private message ffs • for fucks sake gl • good luck
kmb • kiss my booty ty • thank you fyi • for your information

Q: Hey, I was at spinchat.de and it looks different – why is that?

A: Besides being in a different language, spinchat.de has a much newer and cleaner look, and operates more smoothly. Since spinchat.com is the smallest of all the other chat servers we are the alst to get thigns, like chat upgrades…spinchat.de is running a new version of the chat software that everyone connects to. This upgrade will happen "soon", but don't hold your breath.

Q: How do I get back to that Oblivion chatroom, it was awesome!!

A: Common question. There are actually two ways of doing this.

The first: After logging in, click on 'chat' then the drop down menu for 'temporary rooms' – you will then be able to click on Oblivion or any other temporary chat you wish to join.

The second: if you are in another chatroom or conversation with another personal you can still join oblivion without going to the menu and without leaving the the conversation you are currently in. Just type /join oblivion as shown below:

How to get to Oblivion

Q: Why were those words in red (or other colors)?

A: There are two cases in which words on your screen will be red – when you have been warned by an operator, or when someone typs in your nickname. Green text usually refers to a notice of a user being opped. Gray text shows that the user has typed an 'action' or used the /me command. (view a list of commands here)

SPiN Terms

Spinchat has its own terms that you will come across as you chat… read up on these and you'll have a better idea of what's going on

  • Dials • This means a private message (pm) between you and another person. "get in my dials" meaning "talk privately with me"
  • Op • Make someone an operator... "he was opped" "can you op me?" the opposite of this being deop.
  • Operator • Someone with special privileges in the room, has the ability to kick and warn someone, denoted by a blue color.
  • Admin • A person with special privileges above that of an operator, denoted by a red hue, has the ability to ban a user from the chat for 30 minutes as well as mute them - along with everything else that operators can do. You get admin privileges by creating a room, having the status of ‘server operator', or being owner of a room.
  • Server Operator • A select group of people chosen by SPiN to manage all the rooms on spinchat.com - they have the ability to kick people in any room they join as well as put a 24 hour ban on users.
  • Kick • To kick someone means to remove them from the room... you must have operator/admin status to do this.
  • Ban • To ban someone from a chat is to remove them from the room for 30 minutes, at which point the ban expires and they can rejoin. Only Admins / Server Operators can do this. A server operator also has the ability to put a ‘server ban' on you, which lasts for 24 hours, at which point you will be allowed to log back in.
  • Spinpoints • The currency of SPiNchat - allows you to purchase items such as gifts and VIP for other users (see below). You get one spin point a day for logging on.
  • Gift • A little icon that costs a certain amount of spin points to give to another user. There are special limited edition gifts which come out on holidays (like fireworks on new years). Try not to be a gift whore.
  • VIP • An extra feature you pay for (or if you're lucky, receive as a gift) which allows you to have up to 300 friends (versus the normal 20) unlimited guestbook entries (usually restricted to 10), longer blogs and you can add up to 40 pictures!!! WOW!
